GERUND PHRASES

Existen tres alternativas:
1.
COMO SUJETO DE UNA ORACION
Being a teacher could be interesting. Ser educador/a podría ser interesante.
2.
COMO OBJETO DEL VERBO
I would like being a teacher.
Me gustaría ser educador/a.
3.
COMO OBJETO DE UNA PREPOSICION
I'm interested in being a teacher.
Estoy interesado/a en ser educador/a.

GERUND PHRASES AS "SUBJECTS"
Working in the media could be fun.
Trabajar en los medios podría ser divertido..
Directing the news would be nerve-rocking.
Dirigir el noticiero sería sumamente estresante..
Designing interactive media seems challenging.
Diseñar medios interactivos parece desafiante.
Working with computers sounds interesting.
Trabajar con computadoras parece interesante.
GERUND PHRASES AS "OBJECTS"
I'd love working in the media.
Me encantaría trabajar en los medios.
I would hate directing the news.

HOMEWORK

The king's daughter
Once upon a time there lived a king. The king had a beautiful daughter.  But there was a problem. Everything the princess touched would melt.  No matter what; metal, wood, plastic -- anything she touched would melt.  Because of this, men were afraid of her. Nobody would dare marry her.  The king despaired. What could he do to help his daughter? He consulted his
wizards and magicians. One wizard told the king, "If your daughter touches one thing that does not melt in her hands, she will be cured."  The king was overjoyed. The next day, he held a competition. Any man that could bring his daughter an object that would not melt would marry her and inherit the king's wealth.  Three young princes took up the challenge. The first prince brought a very hard alloy of titanium. But alas, once the princess touched it, it melted.  The prince went away sadly.  The second prince brought a huge diamond, thinking that diamond is the hardest substance in the world and would not melt. But alas, once the princess touched it, it melted. He too was sent away disappointed.  The third prince approached. He told the princess, "Put your hand in my pocket and feel what is in there." The princess did as she was told, though she turned red. She held it in her hand. And it did not melt!!!  The king was overjoyed. Everybody in the kingdom was overjoyed. And the
third prince married the princess and they both lived happily ever after.
Question: What was the object in the prince's pants?

The Well-Dressed Salesman

A little old man answered a knock on the door one day, only to be confronted by a very well-dressed young man in a navy blue pinstriped suit, red silk tie, white shirt, shoes polished like black mirrors, and carrying a vacuum cleaner.
"Good morning," said the young man. "If I could take a couple minutes of your time, I would like to demonstrate the very latest in high-powered vacuum cleaners."
"Get lost, Mister fancy suit!" said the old man. "I haven't got any money" and he proceeded to close the door.
Quick as a flash, the young man wedged his polished shoe in the door and pushed it wide open.
"Don't be too hasty!" he said. "Not until you have at least seen my demonstration."
The old man again told him to get lost. And with that, the young man emptied a bucket of mud all over his hallway carpet.
"If this vacuum cleaner does not remove all traces of this mess from your carpet, Sir, I will personally eat the remainder.
"I got a better idea" said the old man, looking the young man up and down "If you don't clean it all up, I'll swap those fancy clothes of yours fer my overalls."
"Fine, sir!" said the young man confidently.
"That fancy suit and tie are gonna look good on me!" said the old man."But take them shoes off first!"
"But sir! I haven't demonstrated the vacuum yet!"
"Yes, you have. The electricity ain't workin"..."

HOMEWORK

1.- READING.

The mind is a terrible thing to waste
An 80 year old couple were having problems remembering things, so they decided to go to their doctor to get checked out to make sure nothing was wrong with them. When they arrived at the doctor's, they explained to the doctor about the problems they were having with their memory. After checking the couple out, the doctor tells them that they were physically okay but might want to start writing things down and make notes to help them remember things. The couple thanked the doctor and left.  Later that night while watching TV, the old man got up from his chair and his wife asks, "Where are you going?"  He replies, "To the kitchen."  She asks, "Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?"  He replies, "Sure."She then asks him, "Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?"  He says, "No, I can remember that."  She then says, "Well I also would like some strawberries on top. You had better write that down cause I know you'll forget that."  He says, "I can remember that, you want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries."  She replies, "Well I also would like whipped cream on top. I know you will forget that so you better write it down."  With irritation in his voice, he says, "I don't need to write that down I can remember that." He then fumes into the kitchen.  After about 20 minutes he returns from the kitchen and hands her a plate of bacon and eggs.  She stares at the plate for a moment and says, "You forgot my toast."

2.- INFORMATION.

WOULD + PRONOUN + LIKE + INFINITIVE VERB + ?

Would you like to go to the movies?
(¿Te gustaría ir al cine?)

Would you like to play videogames?
(¿Te gustaría jugar videojuegos?)

Would you like to eat in a restaurant?
(¿Te gustaría comer en un restaurante?)

ACCEPTING AND REFUSING INVITATIONS.

Would you like a cup of tea? Yes, I would./ No, I would not.
(¿Te gustaría una taza de café? Si.

ACCEPTING
Yes, I'd like to...
I'd love to.
Yes, I'd love to.
Sure, I'd like to.

REFUSING
I'm sorry, but I can't.
I'd love to, but I can't.
I'm sorry, I have to (give an excuse)
